StatusPulse vs Datadog Synthetics

Datadog Synthetics is excellent if you're already running the full Datadog observability stack (APM, logs, infra metrics). If you just need uptime monitoring + a public status page, StatusPulse covers the same ground for an order of magnitude less. Plus native protocol-level probes (gRPC, Postgres, WebSocket, SMTP/IMAP) without complex Datadog test definitions.

Prices and feature lists last verified 2026-05-22. Vendor pricing can change — check both pricing pages before deciding.

At a glance

~10×

Cheaper at scale

StatusPulse Pro: $19/mo flat, 50 probes, unlimited check runs. Datadog Synthetics: $5 / 10k API test runs + $12 / 1k browser runs — scales fast with frequency and count.

Bundled

Public status page

Public status pages with custom domain, branding, and AI incident updates are part of StatusPulse from Pro. Datadog has internal status views; for customer-facing pages you bolt on a separate product.

No vendor lock

Standalone tool

StatusPulse works regardless of your observability stack. Datadog Synthetics needs a Datadog account and (in practice) Datadog APM/Logs for the full picture — $$$ of buy-in.

Pricing for a typical team

A team running ~25 HTTP checks at 1-min interval + 5 multi-step browser flows + a public status page. ~1.1M API runs/month, ~22k browser runs/month.

StatusPulse Datadog Synthetics
Plan price Pro $19 / mo flat Pay-per-run
API test runs (~1.1M/mo) Included ~$550 / mo ($5 per 10k)
Browser test runs (~22k/mo) Not supported ~$264 / mo ($12 per 1k)
Public status page (custom domain + branding) Pro+ included Separate product
AI incident summaries Pro+ included No
Effective total / mo (typical team) $19 — all-in (API only) ~$800+

Honest caveat: if you need browser-flow synthetics (record + replay multi-step user journeys with screenshots and assertions per step), StatusPulse doesn't have that today. Datadog Synthetics excels at it. For pure endpoint / protocol monitoring + a public status page, the price gap is enormous.

Which one is right for you?

Pick Datadog Synthetics if…

  • You're already a Datadog customer with APM, logs, and infra metrics. Synthetics rounds out the observability story with the same UI, the same alerting, and traces stitched to your test runs.
  • Browser / multi-step user flows are core — record a checkout flow once, replay it from N regions, screenshot every step. Datadog ships this; StatusPulse doesn't (yet).
  • You're a large team with budget for the full Datadog suite and procurement-tier SOC 2 / SAML requirements on day one.

Pick StatusPulse if…

  • You don't have a Datadog account and the buy-in price for the full stack is way more than you need just to monitor URLs and post incident updates.
  • You want a public status page bundled — custom domain, branding, AI updates included from Pro at $19/mo. Datadog's status-page story is a separate add-on.
  • Your stack has Postgres, MySQL, or Redis you want to probe with real queries — Datadog's DB coverage is via Database Monitoring (separate product), not Synthetics.
  • EU hosting matters per tenant, not just per region of the entire SaaS.
  • Flat pricing instead of pay-per-run that scales with check frequency and count.

Switching from Datadog Synthetics

Most teams who switch keep Datadog for APM/logs and move Synthetics + status pages out:

  1. Sign up for the free plan. Recreate your top 5 Synthetics API tests as StatusPulse probes.
  2. Forward alerts to the same Slack channel Datadog uses. Compare detection over 1-2 weeks — confirm parity.
  3. Publish a parallel public status page on a sub-domain. Datadog never had this; show it to support / sales / customer-success and gather feedback.
  4. Disable the migrated Synthetics tests in Datadog. Per-test cost drops immediately. Most teams pocket $400-700/mo immediately, while keeping APM/logs/infra intact.
